ZARA & ZC, 50 ANNIVERSARY

ZARA & ZC · 50 ANNIVERSARY is a short Super-8 film shot at dusk around the Dome of Monte de San Pedro, in La Coruña, during the audiovisual installation commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Zara, narrated in Spanish with English subtitles.

ZC1000 camera with tiny Fujinon 5.5 mm and Soviet grip

Conceived as a small photochemical poem, the film was made following a fully artisanal workflow. Most of the footage was shot on outdated Fujichrome Astia 100 reversal film, manually cut from 35 mm slide stock into Super-8 strips and reloaded into Single-8 cartridges — a discontinued system kept alive through hands-on practice.

Handheld shooting

Some interior scenes were filmed on fresh Kodak Vision 500T motion-picture negative film.

The entire process — filming, hand processing, traditional editing by cutting and splicing, magnetic sound striping, sound recording and final digitisation — was carried out also in La Coruña. The film was edited and sound-recorded directly on the Super-8 original film positive, using magnetic tracks, before being scanned in 4K.

Ultra compact P2 camera with Voigtländer attachment

Beyond its technical commitment to photochemical cinema, the film is also a personal tribute: a quiet homage to the filmmaker’s mother, Julia, who appears briefly on screen, accompanying the work with her silent presence.
