(En español, al final)
Long before Beaulieu introduced a similar configuration for its 6008, I had already arrived at this solution on my own, as a young university student in Barcelona, at a time when, without the Internet, without forums and without the possibility of consulting in a matter of seconds the experiences of other filmmakers on the other side of the world, many things had to be discovered through technical conjecture and, above all, by experimenting.
I had bought, at an eye-watering price despite it being second-hand, a Leitz Cinegon 10 mm f/1.8, originally intended for the never sufficiently praised Leicina Special. The workshop at Foto Arpi, on Barcelona's Ramblas, adapted it to C-mount so that I could use it on my Fujica ZC1000, as my intention was to combine it with an Iscorama 36, purchased from Tony Shapps of The Widescreen Centre in London. That was, in fact, my first solution for shooting anamorphic with the ZC1000.
Later I would end up opting for the formidable, but enormous and heavy, Iscorama 54, mounted on the camera's massive original Fujinon zoom. At first I had not dared to do so because Mr Mampel had warned me, erring perhaps on the side of excessive caution, that the combination might place too much weight on the ZC1000's lens mount. In time I discovered that the Fujica's extraordinary construction could support it perfectly well, and that combination became my standard anamorphic set-up for decades, until, after my month-and-a-half expedition to Antarctica, my back decided to have its say on the matter.
Because of my spinal problems, carrying such a combination ceased to be advisable, and so, rather curiously, I have ended up returning to that first solution of my youth: the little 10 mm Leitz Cinegon with the Iscorama 36.
AN EXTRAORDINARILY COMPACT COMBINATION.
One of the great virtues of the Iscorama system is its famous single-focus design. Unlike other anamorphic systems that require both the taking lens and the anamorphic attachment to be focused, with the Iscorama the taking lens can remain focused at infinity and the Iscorama itself is used to focus on the subject.
The Cinegon is particularly well suited to working in this way. Its focusing mechanism is located at the rear of the lens and is operated by a small control that moves sideways. Once set to infinity, its position does not change when the anamorphic body is handled normally, because the Cinegon's front barrel does not rotate.
There is, however, one important precaution. The camera operator should check from time to time that the Cinegon's control remains exactly at infinity, because an apparently insignificant movement produces a considerable displacement of the rear optical group: between the first two marked positions on the scale we move from nothing less than infinity to one metre.
I have never considered it necessary to immobilise it, but anyone intending to use this combination permanently who is not an experienced filmmaker would do well to secure the control discreetly at infinity with a small strip of suitable 3M tape that leaves no residue, thereby preventing any accidental movement.
NOT JUST FOR THE ISCORAMA.
Over the years I have also used the 10 mm Cinegon several times as a conventional lens, without an anamorphic attachment.
One of the most special examples was while filming around Shackleton's hut in Antarctica. To reach it by helicopter I needed to reduce weight and bulk as much as possible, but I did not want to sacrifice an optic of extraordinary quality and, furthermore, I wanted a more normal focal length than that of the wonderful Fujinon EBC 5.5 mm, my extreme wide-angle lens for the ZC1000.
The little Leitz was perfect for the job: tiny, fast, superbly constructed and with a 10 mm focal length which, on Super 8, provides a very useful angle of view for general filming, together with another particularly interesting characteristic: the enormous depth of field afforded by such a short focal length.
WHAT IS HYPERFOCAL DISTANCE?
It is worth pausing here for a moment over a concept which, in the days of photochemical cinematography, every camera operator knew, but which today, with autofocus systems, may be rather less familiar: hyperfocal distance.
Put very simply, the hyperfocal distance is the focusing distance which, for a given focal length, aperture and criterion of acceptable sharpness, provides the greatest possible depth of field whilst keeping infinity acceptably sharp. When we focus precisely at the hyperfocal distance, the depth of field extends approximately from half that distance to infinity.
There is, however, another very practical way of making use of this concept. If we simply set the Cinegon to infinity, the near limit of the depth of field approximately coincides with the hyperfocal distance. This is where a lens of only 10 mm reveals one of its enormous advantages.
For the calculations accompanying this article I have adopted a circle of confusion of 0.025 mm, deliberately more demanding than some of the traditional criteria used for Super 8. This seems to me more reasonable when dealing with a lens of the Cinegon's quality, modern film stocks and today's possibilities of 4K scanning and projection.
With the Cinegon focused at infinity:
at f/11, depth of field extends approximately from 0.37 m to infinity;
at f/5.6, from about 0.72 m to infinity;
and, perhaps most surprisingly,
even completely wide open at f/1.8, from approximately 2.23 m to infinity.
In other words, even when working at full aperture, any subject at around three metres falls comfortably within the calculated depth of field of the taking lens.
Naturally, being ‘within the depth of field’ does not mean that every point between those distances has exactly the same degree of perfect optical focus. Depth of field describes a zone of sharpness considered acceptable according to the chosen circle of confusion, and its final perception will also depend upon the film stock, processing, projection or scanning, reproduction size and the viewer's own standards.
CINEGON AND ISCORAMA 36: EACH DOES ITS OWN JOB.
All this becomes particularly interesting when the Cinegon is used with the Iscorama 36. The Cinegon can remain quite happily at infinity whilst the Iscorama focuses on the subject. In my practical experience, even when working with the Cinegon completely wide open at f/1.8, I need to set the Iscorama to its 2 metre, 2.5 metre, 3 metre, 3.5 metre and 4 metre marks when shooting subjects at those distances in low light. I have never needed to focus it at 5, 6, 8 or 10 metres because, with the Iscorama left at infinity, I have always obtained perfect definition (at less of two meters, with the Iscorama, I usue +1 or +2 diopters close up lens: looks the clip).
The 10 mm Leitz Cinegon and Iscorama 36 make an extraordinarily convenient combination for filming, as well as being very light compared with my set-up consisting of the enormous Iscorama 54 mounted on the ZC1000's ten-times Fujinon zoom. Curiously, after decades of using that formidable combination, circumstances have brought me back to the very same system I devised when I was a university student.
Sometimes in life, after travelling a very long way, one ends up returning to the starting point. And, as an additional advantage, it is worth recalling something regular readers of this blog already know: with the Iscorama 36 it is very easy to shoot Plus-8 for vertical format.
ALMOST TOUCHING THE LENS.
The Cinegon has yet another technical treat in store. We are not simply talking about an exceptionally fast 10 mm lens with enormous depth of field. We are talking about the Leicina Special's Macro-Cinegon, whose focusing mechanism allows us to leave infinity behind and focus progressively down to truly extraordinary distances.
The markings on my example are:
∞ — 1 m — 0.40 m — 0.20 m — 0.16 m — 0.14 m — 0.12 m.
Twelve centimetres! And since focusing distance is measured from the film plane, we can focus continuously until the subject is practically touching the front element itself, opening up extraordinary possibilities for close-ups and extreme close-ups.
Naturally, when using the Iscorama 36 in the manner described in this article, we have no interest in that macro focusing range: we leave the Cinegon at infinity and take advantage of its enormous depth of field. Used on its own, however, that mechanism turns the little Leitz into a surprisingly versatile optic.
DEPTH-OF-FIELD TABLE FOR THE LEITZ MACRO-CINEGON 10 mm f/1.8
As a complement to this article, below is a depth-of-field table calculated specifically for the positions marked on the focusing control of my Cinegon: infinity, 1 m, 0.40 m, 0.20 m, 0.16 m, 0.14 m and 0.12 m, from full aperture through to f/22.
The calculations use a circle of confusion of 0.025 mm, a deliberately demanding criterion.
For those of us who still shoot on film and, moreover, continue to use lenses designed at a time when focusing was entirely the camera operator's responsibility, knowing these figures is not merely a technical curiosity: it can mean the difference between trusting that something will be in focus and knowing why it will be.
a f/11, la profundidad de campo se extiende aproximadamente desde 0,37 m hasta infinito;
a f/5.6, desde unos 0,72 m hasta infinito;
TABLA DE PROFUNDIDAD DE CAMPO DEL LEITZ MACRO-CINEGON 10 mm f/1.8
