FUMEO 9253 VATICAN: THE PARADOX OF RESTORING A BRAND-NEW PROJECTOR. La paradoja de restaurar un proyector nuevo.

(En español, al final)

A couple of months ago, I arranged a swap with my Italian friend Mario Christian Angiuli: I sent him a Yelco 3600 Quartz that I had as a duplicate and, in exchange, he sent me a 16 mm Fumeo model that was still missing from my collection as an enthusiast of this legendary Italian manufacturer, a Fumeo 9253 in Vatican type paint, and one in a condition that could hardly have been more tempting for a collector: new old stock, never sold and virtually unused.

The exchange worked out perfectly for both of us. The shipping did not. My parcel containing the 3600, sent to Italy by DPD (via Packlink), reached its destination in barely four days; the journey in the opposite direction, however, became a genuine odyssey, because the Fumeo, shipped by Bartolini, took around a month to arrive!!!, and the worst part was not even the wait itself, but the fact that for much of that time the tracking provided no useful information, so that, as the weeks went by, Mario and I began seriously to consider the possibility that this precious 9253 had vanished forever into some mysterious limbo of international parcel delivery.

Just as we were beginning to give it up for lost, it appeared! Mario had packed it carefully; nevertheless, as soon as I opened the parcel it became obvious that the poor Fumeo had not exactly enjoyed a peaceful life during that month: it arrived with its metal rear casing broken, the motor assembly displaced, and some damage to the electronics which, among other things, prevented the optical sound reproduction from working. Had it been a plastic Bauer, I would probably have received nothing but the pieces!

After the initial disappointment, there was nothing for it but to get to work. In life, as my dearly missed mother Julia used to say, “you have to keep moving forward”, so I set about a task containing a paradox that would be difficult to surpass: restoring a brand-new projector.

BRAND NEW, BUT WITH HALF A CENTURY BEHIND IT.

The first job was to have the metal rear cover welded, as one corner had split as the result of an impact which, judging by its effects, must have been considerable. When I subsequently switched on the 9253, a loud noise immediately revealed another consequence of its eventful journey: the sturdy motor shaft had been knocked out of position.

It was as though the people at Bartolini had spent the entire month playing football with the parcel! My good friend Mr. Xerox Fuji helped me with the repairs: naturally, the welding of the casing had to be done elsewhere, while the remaining work was carried out in the workshop of my studio-bunker. We also had to deal with the loop-former rubber parts, which had hardened after so many years of inactivity, as well as giving the machine the essential general lubrication required by a projector which, although new, had been waiting for decades for the moment when it would finally begin to work.

Once the shipping damage had been repaired and the projector reassembled, however, several other minor problems appeared which had nothing whatsoever to do with Bartolini and were most probably the result of the original factory assembly, something that is not altogether surprising in some of the final machines produced by Fumeo, at a time when the commercial 16 mm market was already beginning to fade and certain projectors left the factory assembled but still awaiting the precise final adjustments which, on many occasions, were expected to be carried out by the distributor.

And so began a second restoration, although it might be more accurate to call it a factory set-up... several decades late.

ALL FOR LESS THAN A MILLIMETRE.

The first symptom was the sound, which was unstable, with clearly perceptible wow, particularly noticeable during musical passages or sustained sounds. Looking carefully at the film path, I realised that the roller immediately before the capstan was not turning; at first this might have appeared to be nothing more than a lubrication problem, but it was not: by less than a millimetre, the roller was failing even to make proper contact with the film.

To correct it I had to remove the mechanical head assembly, in other words the complete unit containing the shutter, film transport mechanism and lens and, after loosening the lower sprocket-roller assembly with an Allen key, rotate the entire unit by almost one millimetre counter-clockwise. A minute correction on paper, but enough to transform the stability of the film transport completely and, with it, the sound reproduction.

Curiously enough, that fraction of a millimetre ended up becoming almost the central character in the 9253's entire set-up.

We also discovered that the magnetic sound head did not retract quite far enough when the projector was switched to optical reproduction; once again, the difference was less than a millimetre, but correcting it was essential to prevent the film from continuing to rub unnecessarily against the head while projecting optical-sound prints and, in the long term, causing pointless wear both to the head itself and to the films.

An even more curious detail appeared with prints combining half-width optical and half-width magnetic soundtracks. As it had left the factory, the 9253 reproduced a magnetic soundtrack perfectly and did the same with an optical one, yet it did not correctly read prints using this combined configuration. The mystery had an extraordinarily simple solution: it was enough to move the photocell lens by less than one millimetre for those films to reproduce correctly as well. That blessed millimetre again!

Finally, we discovered that the heat filter used by the still-frame mechanism, when it was supposed to remain completely outside the light path, did not rise all the way and stopped approximately halfway through its travel. This is a relatively common problem in these machines, normally associated with dirt or with the solenoid after decades of service, but in this particular case, with an immaculate, unused machine, everything suggested that it was yet another consequence of the blow received during shipping. Fortunately, it was fixed in barely a couple of minutes.

Thus, between the damage caused during its journey and those tiny maladjustments which it had probably carried with it since the very day it left the factory, Mr. Xerox Fuji and I ended up doing what nobody had done when the projector was genuinely new: completing its final set-up. Now, at last, the 9253 works as it should have worked on its very first day.

WHY A FUMEO 9253 VATICAN?

I was particularly interested in this unit for two reasons. The first, naturally, was to continue gradually completing my collection of Fumeo projectors, a make for which I have had a particular affection for decades and whose machines represent, for me, one of the finest expressions of that Italian philosophy of building professional equipment almost without worrying about weight, size or cost, concentrating instead on making machines capable of working year after year after year.

The second reason is that this particular variant, known as the Vatican, is uncommon in Spain in the 9253 model. As Marcelo Dellepiane, from the Fumeo factory itself, personally explained to me years ago, this particular colour combination had been created as a result of a major order from the Church, an order which must have arrived at the factory like manna from heaven at a time when the traditional 16 mm market had already begun its decline, coinciding with the gradual introduction of those early 3 tubes video projectors and which were beginning to replace motion-picture projectors in schools, institutions, companies and all kinds of audiovisual presentations which until then had been the almost exclusive territory of 16 mm.

Having myself been the Fumeo importer for Galicia and the whole of north-western Spain, I know that the 9253 Vatican was never officially imported into Spain, a circumstance which made the opportunity to add one to my small cinematographic museum all the more attractive, especially one which had remained new throughout all these years.

REVERSE PROJECTION AND STILL FRAME.

One of the features I particularly like about the Fumeo 9253 is that it comes as standard with reverse projection and still-frame capability, two very interesting features in a professional 16 mm machine and ones which were not necessarily fitted to every model in the Fumeo range.

Reverse projection, in fact, was not something Fumeo systematically incorporated into all its projectors; one of my 9271s, for example, was specifically ordered by me at the time with reverse running as an option, something which illustrates just how willing Fumeo was to configure its machines according to the particular requirements of each customer. Mr Bianchi, the owner of the company, never said no to anything!

These details may perhaps seem anecdotal today, particularly to anyone who has grown up in a world in which an image can be stopped, moved forwards or backwards simply by pressing a key, but in a motion-picture projector all of this involves real mechanisms, clutches, motors and mechanical solutions, and it helps to explain the Fumeo philosophy: genuine professional machines, extraordinarily robust, built to work and, to a considerable extent, configurable to suit their owners.

IT WILL NOT JUST BE SOMETHING TO LOOK AT.

After this entire adventure, I could hardly be more pleased with the result. The 9253 Vatican runs like silk. So, although it will naturally occupy a special place among the Fumeos I keep in my studio-bunker, I have no intention of condemning it to become merely a display piece, because from time to time I will project films with it, which is, after all, what it was built to do and what gives real meaning to preserving these wonderful machines in full working order.

I particularly like the thought that a projector manufactured decades ago, which remained brand new and unsold throughout all those years, should have had to wait until 2026 to cross half of Europe, survive a journey that nearly finished it off, be welded, repaired, lubricated and adjusted millimetre by millimetre — or, rather, fraction of a millimetre by fraction of a millimetre — and finally pass through the expert hands of Mr. Xerox Fuji before beginning, at last, its real life as a projector. It is never too late if the film is good!

There is now only one thing I still need in order to have it exactly as I want it: an extended anamorphic lens holder, an accessory fitted to all the other Fumeos that make up what I affectionately call “my stable”. And then, after half a century of waiting and a month spent playing football with Bartolini, another Fumeo will be ready for many years of service.
