ARRIFLEX DS8: THE HOLY GRAIL OF MANFRED JAHN

A Super-8 camera whose existence was doubted, the almost mythical Arriflex DS8 (for Double Super8 film), a kind of Holy Grail of the S8, really did exist.
Arri only made 14 of these cameras, for professional television use. The operators shot with them news, in Europe, that was sent to the United States: film being revealed on the plane!!!
One of these camera, this one, is in the office of Manfred Jahn, Arri's top executive, and who has made his treasure known in the group dedicated to the Double Super-8 thanks to the Italian director of photography, and good friend, Alfredo Betro'.
Of the 14 Arriflex DS8s produced, Manfred Jahn guards no less than 3!!! No one knows the whereabouts of the other 11.
Like the Pentacon Pentaflex Super 8 DS-8, produced behind the Iron Curtain, the Arriflex DS8 has a rotating mirror shutter. Mirror shutters, whether rotating or oscillating (Fujica ZC1000, French  made Beaulieu), are the most interesting option from a cinematographer's point of view.

MORE ABOUT THE DOUBLE SUPER8.
This type of film presentation comes in 16mm wide rolls with S-perforations on both edges. To shoot on DS8, one side is first exposed longitudinally, flipped over, and, then,  the other side is exposed.
After development, it is cut in half and two strips of Super-8 remain. It is, the DS8, the format of several beautiful cameras: the Bolex DS8, the Canon DS8, the Pathe DS8 or the Elmo Trifilmatic.
Also, using the DS8 to its full width, without cutting, I can use this type of film with my Bolex Ultrapan camera which provides the amazing 3.1 format without the need for anamorphic.

SECRETS OF THE CINEMATOGRAPHIC TRADE.
DS8 production is cheaper, first of all, as it is an intermediate pitch form

at that is manufactured in-house, at Kodak, prior to Super-8 production, when the 35mm master roll is divided into 600 meter 35mm pancakes: one side is perforated for 16mm and the other for Double Super-8 which is subsequently cut in two to be inserted into the cartridges. 
Of course Kodak can supply these DS8 Ektachrome pancakes in 120 meter rolls or 30 meter reels, but the minimum order is many thousands of dollars, payable in advance, and at the moment there is only one company that has taken a chance : Pro 8mm from Los Ángeles, California.
Kodak also can supply these pancakes without perforations. In this case, perforation must be done by the reseller. 

WHERE TO BUY A DOUBLE SUPER8 FILM?
Foma sells, in Europe, its Double Super8 film in black and white, available locally in each country of the European Union. But, for color, whether it is reversal (Kodak Ektachrome) or negative (Kodak Vision range), there is no other option than Pro 8mm.

ARRIFLEX DS8: EL SANTO GRIAL DE MANFRED JAHN

Una cámara de Súper-8 de cuya existencia se dudó, la casi mítica Arriflex DS8 (para película de Doble Súper8), una especie de Santo Grial del S8, realmente existió. 
Arri únicamente fabricó 14 de estas cámaras, para su uso profesional en televisión. Los operadores filmaban con ellas noticias, en Europa, que se enviaban a Estados Unidos: ¡¡¡siendo reveladas en el avión!!!
Una de ellas es propiedad de Manfred Jahn, alto ejecutivo de Arri, y que ha dado a conocer su tesoro en el grupo consagrado al Doble Súper-8 gracias al director de fotografía italiano, y buen amigo,  Alfredo Betro'.
De las 14 Arriflex DS8 producidas, ¡¡¡Manfred Jahn custodia nada menos que 3!!!  Nadie conoce el paradero de los otras 11.
Como la Pentacon Pentaflex Super 8 DS-8, producida tras el Telón de Acero, la Arriflex DS8 tiene un obturador de espejo giratario. Los obturadores de espejo, ya sean giratorios, ya oscilantes (Fujica ZC1000, las Beaulieu francesas), son la opción mas interesante desde el punto de vista de un director de fotografía.

MAS SOBRE EL DOBLE SÚPER8.
Este tipo de presentación cinematográfica viene en rollos de 16 mm de ancho con perforaciones tipo S en ambos bordes. Rodando en DS8, primero se expone longitudinalmente un lado, se le da la vuelta, y se expone el otro.
Tras el revelado, se corta por la mitad y quedan dos tiras de Súper-8. Es, el DS8, el formato de alguna de mis cámaras favoritas: la Bolex DS8, la Canon DS8 o la Elmo Trifilmatic. 
También, empleando el DS8 en toda su anchura, sin cortar, puedo usar este tipo de película con mi cámara Bolex Ultrapan que proporciona el asombroso formato 3.1 sin necesidad de anamórfico.´

SECRETOS DEL NEGOCIO CINEMATOGRÁFICO.
La producción de DS8 es mas barata, en primer lugar, pues es un formato de paso intermedio que se fabrica internamente, en Kodak, antes de la producción en Súper-8, cuando el rollo maestro de 35 mm es dividido en pancakes de 600 metros de 35 mm: un lado se perfora para 16 mm y el otro para Doble Súper-8 que, posteriormente, se corta en dos para ser introducido en los cartuchos. 
Naturalmente que Kodak puede suministrar estos pancakes de Ektachrome en DS8 en rollos de 120 metros o en bobinas de 30 metros, pero el pedido mínimo es de muchos miles de dólares, pagaderos por adelantado y, de momento, sólo hay una empresa que se ha arriesgado: Pro 8mm de Hollywood.

¿DÓNDE COMPRAR PELÍCULA DE DOBLE SÚPER8?
Foma vende, en Europa, su película de Doble Súper8 en blanco y negro, disponible localmente en cada país de la Unión Europea. Pero, para color, ya sea inversible (Kodak Ektachrome) o en negativo (gama Kodak Vision), no hay mas opción que recurrir a Pro 8mm.
