BEAUTIFUL FRENCH LADIES WHO ARE EXPENSIVE TO KEEP. Unas preciosas francesas caras de mantener.

 (En español, al final)

Beaulieu is a magical name to any Super 8 enthusiast. It´s French, it´s beautiful, it has class, it inspires passion and, every now and then, it can test the patience and empty the wallet of anyone fortunate — or foolhardy — enough to live with one. Rather like certain French legends, you might say.

The "affair" of Beaulieu... with Super 8 began practically with the format itself. In 1965, when Kodak had just introduced a system intended primarily to allow any amateur to shoot movies without requiring too much technical knowledge, Beaulieu decided that Super 8 could also be taken very seriously indeed. Thus was born the legendary 2008, the first representative of a lineage that would culminate, a few years later, in the 4008, one of the most iconic cameras in the entire history of Super 8.

Curiously, my relationship with Beaulieu began not with a camera, but with a projector. In the mid-1980s I bought a stereo Beaulieu projector, which I would sell years later when, in 1995, I acquired the then-new Beaulieu Studio, both in its standard and HTI versions. Both are still with me and continue to perform entirely to my satisfaction. With projectors, therefore, my romance with the French ladies has been a happy one. With the cameras... the relationship has proved somewhat more tempestuous.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT... AND FIRST BREAKDOWN.

By the mid-1980s I was already regularly shooting with my Fujica ZC1000N, but in 1985 an opportunity arose that was difficult to resist. Deiris, Beaulieu's official importer in Spain, offered a special deal to photographic dealers, and I decided to invest in a gleaming new Beaulieu 6008S. It was a Beaulieu. It was French. It was sophisticated. It was beautiful. I was a young man. What could possibly go wrong?

I took it on its maiden outing during a cruise and, to my dismay, it left me stranded on the second or third cartridge! Fortunately, even then I was in the habit of never entrusting an important shoot to a single camera, and I had taken another two, considerably more modest ones. The humble cameras came to the rescue of the glamorous French.

Back in Spain, the 6008S went to Deiris's service department and returned to me accompanied by new rechargeable batteries and a new charger. But that camera never worked as I expected it to. Nor did I have much better luck later with the Pro version, so my confidence in Beaulieu was seriously shaken. My fascination with it was not. And that is far more dangerous.

THE BEAULIEUS THE CLIENT EXPECTED TO SEE.

Years later, mainly for marketing reasons connected with my production company, I ended up buying a Beaulieu 7008 Pro fitted with the legendary Angénieux 6-90 mm, another 7008S body and, considerably later, a 9008S.

Throughout the 1990s and into the early years of this century, I used Super 8 commercially for work commissioned by clients, mainly advertising. When it came to the serious shooting, however, I tended to place my trust in other cameras: the Leicina Special, the Bauer A512, the Canon 1014 XLS whenever I needed sync sound and, naturally, my inseparable Fujica ZC1000N.

There was, however, one consideration I could not ignore: in front of a client, a Beaulieu 7008 or 9008 looked like a professional camera. In the audiovisual business, the image you project is also part of the job.

Thus, on certain shoots, I might be doing the heavy lifting with a Fuji, Leicina, Bauer or Canon while, perfectly visible on the set, an imposing Beaulieu stood nearby. It was not merely a decorative prop, of course, because I used it as well. But let us admit it: a 7008 Pro fitted with that enormous Angénieux had a presence that commanded respect. The client took one look at it and immediately understood that serious people had arrived. Even if the serious people happened to be shooting with another camera at that particular moment.

THE FRENCH LADIES' APPETITE.

As my Beaulieus were used relatively infrequently, for many years I gave up maintaining their original rechargeable battery packs and powered them with alkaline cells instead. They worked... more or less.

Their behaviour could be erratic and, above all, those French ladies appeared to have an insatiable appetite. Depending on circumstances, a set of batteries might last for barely one, two, three or, with luck, four cartridges.

The comparison with the Fujica ZC1000N was almost insulting. With a set of alkaline batteries, my ZC1000N can comfortably shoot more than fifty cartridges. With lithium cells, I have achieved battery lives exceeding one hundred.

The Japanese lady is the sort of companion who travels anywhere with you, eats very little, never complains and is always ready for work. The Beaulieus, on the other hand, seemed to say:

“Another cartridge? Très bien. But first bring me some new batteries.” One obeyed, because they are very beautiful.

CÉSAR COMES TO THE RESCUE.

A few days ago I was talking to my friend César Ballesteros, owner of TESTED SUPER8 CAMERAS and a man with an intimate knowledge of these machines, about the possibility of using lithium cells in my 7008 and 9008. It seemed a logical solution. If lithium cells provide extraordinary battery life in the ZC1000N, why not use them to satisfy the voracious appetite of the French ladies as well?

César advised me not to. For these Beaulieus, his recommendation is to use Panasonic Eneloop Pro rechargeable batteries. They offer high capacity while supplying 1.2 V per cell, exactly the voltage recommended by the factory, rather than the 1.5 V of alkaline cells, which place additional strain on electronics that are no longer young.

I followed his advice, and he was right. The Eneloop Pros operate at a voltage that seems particularly well suited to the 7008 and 9008. Since I started using them, the cameras have behaved far more satisfactorily than they did with the alkaline batteries I had relied upon for so many years. And there is another considerable advantage: they are rechargeable.

After decades of consuming sets of batteries at a rate worthy of a large-engined French motor car, my Beaulieus have suddenly become considerably more affordable to keep.

BEAUTIFUL, TEMPERAMENTAL... BUT IRRESISTIBLE.

Does this mean that, after all these years, I have changed my mind about Beaulieu cameras? Not exactly.

I still regard the Fujica ZC1000N as an extraordinarily reliable and rational camera. If I had to leave tomorrow for some remote corner of the planet and could take only one S8 camera with me, I know perfectly well which one I would choose. A ZC1000N is like a good wife.

But a Beaulieu plays in a different league. The 7008 Pro with its Angénieux 6-90 mm remains one of the most impressive Super 8 cameras one can put on a tripod. And the 9008, the final evolution of that lineage, retains a special fascination even for those of us who know its peculiarities only too well.

Our relationship with certain cameras cannot be explained solely by a table of specifications. There are efficient cameras. There are tough cameras. There are reliable cameras. There are rational cameras. And then there are Beaulieus.

Beautiful French ladies: sophisticated, temperamental and, for many years, rather expensive to keep. Fortunately, thanks to César and Panasonic Eneloop Pro batteries, at least now they eat at home.

AMOR A PRIMERA VISTA...

No exactamente.
