SUPER 8 EKTACHROME 7294: STRATEGIC RESERVES DEPLETED. Agotadas las reservas estratégicas.

Filming with the Fujica ZC1000N demands a level of forward planning that the digital crowd can scarcely imagine, let alone understand. Because it uses Single-8 cartridges—a system that disappeared years ago—it is essential to secure Super 8 or Double Super 8 film well in advance and painstakingly reload it into Single-8 cartridges. The entire process is carried out in complete darkness, frame by frame, requiring patience, precision and a good deal of experience.

It is a slow and demanding task that Álex et moi have spent years refining exclusively for our own productions. It is worth making one point absolutely clear, because we are often asked about it: we do not sell film; we shoot it.

Only six weeks ago I contacted Kodak's representative in Spain to order a box of twenty Super 8 cartridges of Kodak Ektachrome 7294. The reply was as brief as it was worrying: they were sold out. Yet another reminder that genuine photochemical filmmaking, whatever the gauge, remains a world where careful planning is not optional but essential.

There was only one solution: to draw upon IB Cinema's strategic reserves, carefully stored in the studio refrigerator for truly exceptional occasions. And few occasions could be more deserving than a daughter's wedding.

Álex immediately set to work with the dedication and craftsmanship that have always characterised him, and I now have enough freshly reloaded Single-8 cartridges of Kodak Ektachrome 7294 to approach the filming with complete peace of mind. We have also prepared three additional cartridges of Kodak Tri-X to capture the pre-wedding gathering in black and white.

This time, however, my own role will be different. As father of the bride, I shall not be able to operate the ZC1000N during the ceremony itself—apart from the pre-wedding filming—so Álex has very generously volunteered to take on the responsibility of cinematographer.

Naturally, my daughter Verónica Benedeti has engaged a professional wedding digital photographer and videographer. But our ambition goes far beyond creating yet another digital file.

We want this unforgettable day to exist on genuine reversal film as well. We want to preserve an original that can still be projected fifty or even a hundred years from now exactly as it appeared on the day it was filmed. Few experiences in cinema are more rewarding than watching a beautifully projected Kodak Ektachrome original on a large screen, illuminated by the beam of a motion-picture projector. Its texture, depth, colour richness and tangible physical presence remain qualities that the digital world has yet to reproduce convincingly.

Photochemical photography will also play its part, thanks to another lifelong friend. José Manuel—the very person who filmed my own wedding back in 1991—will now photograph my daughter's wedding on Kodak Portra 800. Thirty-five years later, he will once again preserve one of the defining moments in our family's history, because some traditions simply deserve to endure.

EKTACHROME 7294 DE SÚPER-8: RESERVAS ESTRATÉGICAS AGOTADAS

Filmar con la Fujica ZC1000N exige una previsión que la tropa de lo digital difícilmente puede imaginar, y mucho menos comprender. Al utilizar cartuchos de Single-8, un sistema desaparecido hace décadas, es necesario disponer con suficiente antelación de película en Súper-8 o Doble Súper-8 para proceder a su recarga, una operación completamente artesanal que realizamos en absoluta oscuridad, con paciencia y precisión, fotograma a fotograma.

Es un trabajo lento y laborioso que Álex et moi llevamos años perfeccionando exclusivamente para nuestros propios proyectos cinematográficos. Conviene aclararlo porque nos lo preguntan con frecuencia: ¡nosotros no vendemos película; nosotros la filmamos!

Hace apenas mes y medio decidí encargar al representante de Kodak en España una caja de veinte cartuchos de Kodak Ektachrome 7294 en Súper-8, pero su respuesta fue tan breve como inquietante: estaban agotados. Una situación que vuelve a recordarnos hasta qué punto el auténtico cine fotoquímico, cualquiera que sea el formato empleado, continúa siendo un territorio donde la planificación resulta imprescindible.

No quedó más remedio que recurrir a las reservas estratégicas de IB Cinema, cuidadosamente conservadas en la nevera del estudio para ocasiones verdaderamente especiales. Y pocas ocasiones pueden serlo tanto como la boda de una hija.

Álex se puso manos a la obra con la rapidez y el esmero que le caracterizan, y hoy ya dispongo de una cantidad suficiente de Kodak Ektachrome 7294 recargada en cartuchos de Single-8 para afrontar el rodaje con la tranquilidad necesaria. También hemos preparado tres cartuchos adicionales de Kodak Tri-X, destinados a filmar la preboda en blanco y negro.

En esta ocasión, sin embargo, mi papel será distinto. Como padrino de la novia no podré sostener la ZC1000N durante la ceremonia —más allá de la preboda—, por lo que será Álex quien, generosamente y de forma totalmente altruista, asuma la responsabilidad de operador cinematográfico.

Mi hija Verónica Benedeti ha contratado, como es lógico, una fotógrafa y un videógrafo profesionales especializados en bodas. Pero nuestra ilusión va mucho más allá del inevitable archivo digital.

Queremos que ese día tan importante exista también sobre una auténtica película inversible. Queremos conservar un original reversible que pueda seguir proyectándose dentro de cincuenta o cien años exactamente igual que el primer día. Porque no hay sensación más gratificante que contemplar una película Kodak Ektachrome proyectada sobre una pantalla, iluminada por la luz de un proyector cinematográfico. Hay una textura, una profundidad, una riqueza cromática y una presencia física que el mundo digital todavía no ha conseguido reproducir con fidelidad.

La fotografía química también estará presente gracias a otro viejo amigo. José Manuel, la misma persona que filmó mi boda en 1991, será ahora el encargado de realizar las fotografías con película, utilizando para ello Kodak Portra 800. Treinta y cinco años después volverá a registrar otro momento decisivo de nuestra familia, porque algunas tradiciones, sencillamente, no deberían perderse nunca.
