CUSTOM-MADE SINGLE-8 CARTRIDGES FOR KODAK FILM

Using Single-8 cartridges, with Kodak 8mm type S (Super-8) film, allows get the best of both worlds:

1) being able to shoot with the best motion picture films (of course, those made by good old Kodak);

2) use the best cartridge system (parallel axes like those of cassette tapes, and not coaxillae; metal pressure pad in camera; cartridges designed to reload), with the best camera ever designed for small format cinema, the unbeatable Fujica ZC1000.

I am already preparing for my next project on Global Warming, this time in Antarctica. My idea is to shoot it only using Single-8 cartridges with 8 mm type S film slitted from Double Super-8 rolls. And, also, instead of shoot it with negative film, my idea is to shoot the entire feature with reversal film!, mainly with the supberb and unrivaled Kodak Ektachrome 7294, but also with Tri X black and white film.

  • These cartridges ARE NOT TO BE SOLD TO OTHERS: they are for my exclusive use!
  • Where to buy Double Super-8 film to slit and reload our own Single-8 cartridges? Usually, Pro 8 mm, in United States,  is a good source for many, and they send parcels to many countries:

With Kodak film in single8 cartridges, in the past, I shot little wonders like this with Kodak film (Vision 200 and 500):

Documentaries like this (Vision 50, 200 and 500):

VIGILIA PASCUAL EN LA CORUÑA from IB CINEMA Motion Picture Films on Vimeo.

And, even, an opus in Kodachrome!!!

NEW FILMS IN SINGLE-8 CARTRIDGES

The Single-8 cartridge, which uses Super-8 film, has a better design than the Super-8 itself since it has parallel axes, so that it can be rewound along its entire length, and allows the metal pressure plate to be found in the camera. In addition, the Single-8 cartridge is the one used by the Fujica ZC1000, the best motion picture camera ever designed and manufactured which, at this point in history, will retain this honor forever.

Kodak Ektachrome slide of my own Single-8 cartridges loded with Ektachrome film by myself: NOT FOR SALE, sorry
One of the drawbacks of single-8 is the absence, in Europe, of film (except those that, such me, filmmakers recharge by themselves). This issue has been resolved thanks to the Italian laboratory BOTTEGA ANALOGICA, owned by Riccardo Pascucci, is selling already Single-8 film WITH PROCESSING INCLUDED IN THE PRIC. You can know the prices in this link:  SINGLE-8 PRICES ENCLOSED PROCESSING

With Kodak Vision film, SELF LOADED BY MYSELF, in Single-8 cartridges, I shot one of my most successful music videos with the ZC1000,  published by Kodak in his Facebook:

BIG SCOOP!!! WORLDWIDE EXCLUSIVE !!! THE MOST MODERN COLOUR FILM, AVAILABLE IN SINGLE-8 CARTRIDGES.

Filmmakers who shoot with the best motion picture camera ever built, the Fujica ZC1000, or the smallest S8 camera, the Fujica P2, can be happy again with this great news that comes from Japan: Retro Enterprises will begin next week to sell the best and most modern colour reversal 100 asa film, manufactured y perforated in the Western World, LOADED IN SINGLE-8 CARTRIDGES with 12 meters of film.

This is very important as accurated perforation is essential when you, as professional filmmaker, wants to take advantage of the Fujica ZC1000's advantages in terms of multiple rewinds,  reversing filming, and steadiness. By marketing reasons this 100 ASA film is called RK100D, when sold in Single-8 cartridges.

The price of each cartridge with 12 meters, with processing!, is only 55 euros, which includes the return postage from the laboratory.

But there is more news: Retro Enterprises makes a limited production of the long-awaited reversal High Speed Provia with 400 ASA.  I have tested it and it´s incredible!

Delivery from Japan to European Union is very fast: 3 days only!!!

EU has a fairly new trade agreement with Japan, so if all is well consumer purchases should arrive as if it were shipped from inside EU.

RK100D, what? Ah,  you know which film is... ;-)

Next week, please, read the web page of Retro Enterprises for the order form: http://www.retro8.com/english/englishindex.html

KODAK EKTACHROME 7294 AVAILABLE FOR SINGLE-8, DS8 AND ULTRAPAN 3.1, this summer!!!

The availability, this summer, for professional customers, of  Kodak Ektachrome 7294 in DS8 format (16 mm wide film with type S perforations in both sides of film), opens a new world of possibilities not only to the Double Super 8 gauge, but to Single-8 and Ultrapan 3.1
Ektachrome 7294 DS8 film will be supplied in large 480 meter rolls and it will be the reseller who will have to cut them into small 30, 15 or 10 meter rolls of Double Super-8, or slit to Super-8, but with the compromise of not to reload cartridges of Super- 8!

But,  yes, Single-8 cartridges can be loaded! This opens a new world of possibilities for the best film format, with the precission of perforations made by Kodak itself.
Tak Kohyama from Tokyo is already making all the arrangements, with Kodak Japan, to sell Ektachrome on Single-8, while Phil Vigeant of Pro 8mm will offer it on DS8.

ELMO S800 SINGLE-8 CAMERA

The Japanese brand Elmo is one most admired by the narrow gauge ciné enthusiast, because this firm is responsible for one of the Super-8 more technically valuable projectors -the famous GS1200, particularly interesting in its versions PCom and Xenon.
Elmo, however, is also the brand that, once, in the late 60s, did a ciné madness that, at the time, was  on the verge of taking the company into bankruptcy, the C300 camera, whose body could be adapte to shoot in all the 8 mm formats: Standard 8, Super 8, Single 8 and Double Super-8.
Additionally, Elmo has its name in golden letters in the heart of filmmakers, thanks to other technical goodies, a few of which are enumerated:
1) the only Japanese brand to manufacture a 9.5 mm projector;
2) ability to produce on a commercial scale a device for Super-8 in 3D;
3) responsible for the first 16 mm projector with stereophonic optical sound; and
4) the first f 1.0 zoom lens with high optical quality.
A SINGLE-8 CAMERA THAT IS NOT FROM FUJIFILM
When we write about the Single-8 format in the Western World, everyone inmediately thinks of Fuji. Few filmmakers know that others manufactures, like Konica, Canon, Yashica and Elmo,  also constructed cameras for this ciné format. In fact, Elmo supported Single-8 more than any other brand, not counting the promoter of this format, Fujifilm. Elmo made available ten different models from 1965 to 1975. In this exclusive range for Single-8, the S800 is the top model in the Elmo stable.
REVERSE FILMING BEFORE FUJIFILM.
The availability of shooting in reverse, something that Fuji only offered in 1974 and only with its professional conceived ZC1000, was an constant of Elmo in all Single-8 models, from the simple and cheap, like the Elmo pocket S30, to the jewel in the crown S800. All the Elmo Single-8 cameras, without exception, allow reverse filming.
But it is necessary to clarify, neverthless, that filming in reverse with this camera causes a variation in the frame line, and, although little, is sufficient to requiere frame correction in projection. This does not happen with the Fujica ZC1000, but, of course, we are speaking of a camera that is not comparable, because it is on another price level.
ELMO S800 VERSUS FUJI Z700 & 800.
The S800 appeared in Japan in 1975 to compete with the Fujica Z800 and Z700, that were sold in 1971 and 1972, respectively, for 78000 and 69000 yen, whereas the S800 cost 98000 yen. The S800 has four adventages over the two competing models from Fuji:
1) the main one is the electric reverse shooting or rewing (the two Fuji models only allow manual rewinding);
2) macro at any focal lenght;
3) its smaller weight (1 kilo against 1 kilo 400 grams); and
4) slightly superior slow motion speed (48 f.p.s. against 36 f.p.s.), with instantaneous commutation without needing to interrupt shooting.
Fuji Z800, Fuji Z700 and Elmo S800 cameras share some common characteristics, like single frame shooting, 18 and 24 f.p.s. and variable shutter between 0 and 160 degrees, lockable at any setting.
Besides the price, the Fuji is superior in the quality of the lens. Both the Z700 and Z800 have lenses with E.B.C. coating, then a technical innovation and nowdays only used in very professional lenses.
Additionally, both Fuji models have a circular iris, as in professional lenses, whereas the Elmo has a simple diaphagm of two blades, common in Super-8 cameras.
ELMO S800: A VERY GOOD CAMERA FULL OF FEATURES.
First surprise of the camera is its little weight. The construction, although good, and able to maintain the camera totally operative after more than 40 years, is not of the highest quality as in the Fuji Z700 and 800, beside those four points already commeted on above:
1) the pressure plate is fully metallic;
2) frame counter: although it is not digital, like the one in the ZC1000, is sufficiently precise for superimposed titles and lap dissolves;
3) the grip is removable, which adds stability when placing the camera on a tripod; and
4) the S800 has a flash synchronising  contact, which in the Z800 is optional.
I bought my unit some years ago in Retro Enterprises, in Tokyo, but recently a Japanese friend gave me another Elmo S800 as a present, in its original box and brand new: a camera that had not been sold in all these years! Surely they are the only two S800 models that there are in Spain, and, one of them perhaps the only brand new one in the World!
Note: I wrote this article for British ciné magazine INTERNATIONAL MOVIE MAKING. It was published also in German in CINE 816.

¡Qué feliz me hicieron! Actualmente, la conservo en una vitrina.
FUJICA C100

http://mimundoensuper-8.blogspot.com.es/2017/08/super-8-fujichrome-velvia-no-hay-futuro.HTML
