WHICH SUPER-8 PROJECTORS TO BUY? Compacts with fast pull down. (part 2 of 10)

Super-8 cousins for the husband and for the wife!

COMPACT SUPER-8 PROJECTORS, with fast pull down. A common characteristic of the projectors mentioned in this chapter two is that their pull down movement is very fast, so they have shutters with blades of up to only 40 degrees, which allows an extraordinary light output.

Could you imagine a projector where you only need to insert the film through the slot and it starts up automatically? This feature, first introduced by Fujifilm in 1980 with the Fujicascope SD Auto,  was imitated by a German company, Robert Bosch, who continued to trust the Super-8 when other multinationals had already thrown in the towel. It was in 1981 with its compact Bauer T450, a projector with exceptional sound quality, an LED digital frame counter, LED level meters and a programming system that allows sophisticated sound recording.

German body with Italian heart

It reads both sound tracks and, in its BauerT 430 version, stereophonic sound. Although its original lens is of the highest quality, the Schneider Xenovar f 1.2 from 15.5 to 28 mm, as an option you can mount the famous Schneider Xenovaron f 1.1 from 11-30 mm, the non plus ultra of German lenses.

The famous Schneider 1.1 11-30 mm as optional extra

In the British technical press of those days, the absence of a feed toothed wheel was criticized, but in practice, the projector works well with up to 180 meters of film and this peculiar system, in exchange, allows you to search for sequences with fast rewinding through the projector.

The most beautiful projector ever designed?

Its female version is the Silma 90 Stereo, very similar in internal characteristics, but with a body of irresistible beauty due to the designer Giulia Doselli. Both the Bauer and Silma were built in the Turin factory of Robert Bosch. Giulia even designed the take-up reel to match the aesthetics of the Silma 90 Stereo!

Noris 512: a German who likes sushi!

Under the name of a well-loved brand in Germany, an even more automatic projector was introduced in 1984, the Noris 512, in which the lamp turns on and off by itself, has an automatic electronic loop reformer, and the motor is switched off not only at the end of the projection but even also after the rewinding. The original zoom of the Noris 512 is only so so quality, so, is much better to change it for other lens, as the Schneider (with an adaption) or the Fujinon 1.0 or 1.2 (whitout any adaption)

Fujicascope SDAuto: the best compact projector, even with optical sound!

The Noris 512 is the economic version of the Fujicascope SD Auto, a projector originally introduced in 1980 and which, in addition to everything from the Noris, has optical sound and an ingenious take up reel that allows viewing up to 6 reels of newly developed films one after another, without the need to rewind up individually.

Optional Fujinon 1.0 25 mm, first class lens

Optionally, the SD Auto was sold in some countries such  Spain with that dark object of desire that is the Fujinon f 1.0 25mm "flat field" lens that allows the maximum use of the 100W lamp combined with the fast pull down of the claw and shutter of only 40 degrees blades: with this configuration, this small projector provides more light on the screen, and whiter, than any other projector with the same lamp, with "needle sharpness" corner to corner.

One of the best two 1,0 zoom lenses ever made

The original zoom, 1.3 15-25 mm is only average quality, but if a zoom is necessary, then, the election is the high quality 1.0 Fujinon 14-28 mm, as in the above photgraph.

A very important feature of this projector is that the lateral door is of  open-swing type, so, access to film path is very easy.

It is interesting to have one of these projectors, especially the Fujicascope SD Auto, to check recently processed films with great quality. The models described in this chapter are extremely careful with our beloved films and do not scratch them. As they take up little space, they are projectors that fit anywhere.

WHICH SUPER-8 PROJECTORS TO BUY? (part 1 of 10)

A Super-8 motion picture projector fascinates to the smallest of the family... but not only them!, with its purring, its toothed wheels and the spinning reels. When projecting with a quality machine, watching a super-8 movie on the big screen, especially when using top quality emulsions like Kodak Ektachrome 7294, is an unforgettable experience impossible to emulate with digital projection, aseptic and cold.

Elmo GS1200 xenon
The arrival of  Kodak Ektachrome film for  Super-8,  in 2018,  has reactivated interest in the direct projection of reversal originals, to the point that Phil Vigeant, of Pro 8 mm, in Hollywood, has started selling Magnum projectors fully refurbished, like new and with warranty, modified to accept the brilliant 150W halogen lamp.

Braun Visacustic 2000 Digital

Will other companies follow the path marked by Pro 8mm? The truth is that the Super-8 projectors never turned off the lights completely. Tens of thousands of sound projectors, especially high-end ones, have survived video and DVD era... despite its constant use over the years.

The beasts: The best of USA VS the beast of Austria

Remembered firms like Derann Films in England continued to sell new feature and short films until their closure in 2011, not long after the death of their founder Derek Simmonds. Even now, brand new  titles can be obtained by certain laboratories from internegative (also, of course, kinescopes, with tip-top quality), with some discretion, exclusively for private non-commercial use.

Fumeo 9143 HTI in the booth of a public auditorium

The latest handcrafted Super-8 sound projectors were built until the beginning of this century by Fumeo, in Milan, a firm that is highly reputed for its professional 16mm and Super-8 projectors, designed with oversized components and easy to repair, still in daily operation in the booths of many film libraries, filmoteques and art houses. But the Fumeo are industrial machines designed primarily for projecting from booths, too big and noisy for use in homes.

Eumig 940 Multiprocessor Stereo

You can find, however, other projectors, manufactured during the seventies, in the eighties and until the mid-nineties, of the highest quality in terms of performance, reasonable size, and even tiny, so well built that, almost half a century after leaving the factories, they are fully operational. They are little jewels of the technology, mixing principies of XIX Century with nowdays electronic, that not only allow magnificent projections but also the recording of complex soundtracks on the film itself, a craftsmanship again available to all filmmakers thanks to Movie Magnetic, the Italian laboratory that use paste magnetic "slurry" for the tracks, identical to the one used at the time by Kodak and Fujifilm, which adheres to both polyester and tricetate film bases, and never peels off.

In this series of ten articles, a digest of the one published in the international magazine SilverGrain Classics, are described the most interesting projectors to buy, depending on the use they will be put to.

a) su peso descomunal;

EUMIG'S CRAZY ECS SPLICES

The craziest splicing system for Super-8 film could only have emerged in the late sixties in the fiendishly of the wizards of Wien: the Eumig Chemo Splicer (also available for 8mm), with its caractheristic"tooth of sierra ", always visible in projection! (because the madness of its sawtooth cut that invade part of two frames).

I bought my ECS splicer when I was twelve years old but I never liked the system, until a few years ago! Now I use it when I want to make a slightly special transition between two sequences

A splicer like this could only have been invented in the 1960s, sprung from the diabolical mind of a Teutonic scientist from Austria. In his day, as a child, the Eumig Chemo Splicer splicer cost a fortune (5,500 pesetas in 1972), and  me, of course, was not at all happy with sawtooth cut).

However, currently, with vintage in full swing, these crazy sawtooth splices, from the mythical Eumig (in those times the most important company in Austria), are a reflection of an era, so I try to sneak some into almost all my documentaries, as a nod to all of us who grew up with the super-8 and knowing that they will go unnoticed by the vast majority of viewers. After making the ECS splice, I reinforce it with another invisible one from Fujifilm.

O.R.S.-II : ¡MEJORADO!
