"PERFECTA LOCURA ANTÁRTICA" EN SILVERGRAIN CLASSICS / Perfect Antarctic Madness in SilverGrain Classics

SILVERGRAIN CLASSICS, the magazine lavishly printed in Germany and distributed in English to more than 70 countries around the world, has become over the years a kind of bible of the photochemical world both in the creative field, with the portfolios of the main international champions that use film, as in the technical field, revealing new developments in the sector before any other printed medium.

It´s not surprising that the legendary Kodak, a brand with us since the 19th century, reserves the last page of Silvergrain Classics for advertising its emulsions.

The editors of such a peculiar magazine, the German Marwan Mozayen and the North American Charys Schuler, always with their eyes set on the avant-garde of what some call analogue, it is not surprising that an almost impossible project like "Perfect Antarctic Madness" has caught their attention, so the magazine dedicated a colossal six-page article to this S8 film project in the spring 2024 issue, which went on sale on March 21 (it can be obtained at the main airports or, by mail, ordered to the publisher: each copy costs only €19.90)

"Perfect Antarctic Madness" is a revolutionary documentary that marks a milestone in the history of cinema, taking cinematographic craftsmanship in a narrow film gauge to unsuspected extremes.

Filmed in Antarctica with Super-8 film hand-loaded into Single-8 cartridges, with a camera that turns half a century in 2024, this unique and unusual project represents the fusion between film tradition, craftsmanship, expertise, innovation technique, global warming, the environmental crisis and history. The photographs were also shot on film (both reversal, negative and Instax type Polaroid).

Filmmaker Ignacio Benedeti embarked on an epic expedition, overcoming unimaginable challenges, to capture the authentic essence of a frozen continent doomed to disappearance due to global warming.

This film work has already earned the cover of Spanish media.

O.R.S. TREATMENT: ALREADY AVAILABLE FOR 35 MM TOO

Archiving colour motion pictures films, one of the main troubles, besides V.S., for all non LPP or Technicolor prints, is the colour fade. This serious trouble, for film archivist and collectors, is now solved, thanks a chemical process developed in Italy by a very well know film technician.

The O.R.S. system is described in depth in SilverGrain Classics, the only one magazine fully devoted in English at photochemical technology and art, published in Germany in English. The issue can be obtained from the publisher by air mail. Here, on the blog, we explain a brief summary.

The O.R.S. substractive system is a procedure that uses a substractive chemical treatment, which is very different from coloring the film.
In the O.R.S. substractive system the red dominant is removed. So, the systems is better advisable to apply to film stocks which, under the red (Kodak) or brown (Fuji) dominant, still retain some other colours. if they are there, then they will come out again. What is there or what is not is not changed or altered.
I have checked it with 3 faded prints and, yes, the ORS Substractive System works pretty well. Of course, the print never will be as it was new but it will be projectable and enjoyable again.
The O.R.S. Substractive System give us, the film collectors and film archivists, the ocasion to return to life some of our beloved faded prints.

ORS: IS NOT A MIRACLE.
The ORS Substractive System is not a miraculous system that returns colours that it no longer has, but manages to remove the red dominant present in the print itself. Fading is like a kind of oxidation, so this procedure is divided into two phases:

1) In phase one, it removes the fading, with the red being subtracted in a chemical process!!!

2) in phase two, adjusts the contrast as much as possible.

If under the red or brown dominant there was no longer any color, then, the result would be very similar to the monochrome. O.R.S. substractive system  subtract what disturbs the vision of the film (the red dominant, which is a kind of "oxidation" that is removed),  which, it's definitely surprising in positive. I  have tested the two phases of the ORS substractive system with 3 ex airline prints, all Eastman SP polyester film, fully faded, and I´m now very happy: nobody. except some crazy collector friend of mine, was looking to watch this faded prints, but now my family can enjoy them again!
The O.R,S. substractive system is able to remove the fading that is very similar to an oxide, from the film, so we can see again the colours that are still under the red cast (fading).
The ORS Substractive System certainly almost completely eliminated the red dominant and contrast is now high.
In the second phase of the treatment it is also possible to act in correction on the contrast. This is how, as can be understood, one does not invent what is not there, and does not alter what is there.
With regards to the duration of the treatment: aging tests have been carried out and have given excellent results also from this point of view, for some years there should be no further alteration.

ADDENDUM: It does not go in any way to remove a color or a dye, but, in an absolutely subtractive way, to remove the kind of oxide that the base color, the cyano, due to a wrong chemical process in its time, erroneously has profit causing the dominant red. Furthermore, in the second phase of the treatment, the contrast is rebalanced, completing the treatment as if it were a new print. This makes it possible to appreciate all the colours that are still present and to interrupt that sort of oxidation which, in fact, would continue to cause the other colours to deteriorate, dragging the film definitively towards red monochrome. The worst thing is to do nothing by witnessing the irreversible deterioration of your movie. If you really like your movies, this is the best thing to be able to enjoy again and keep them for many years.

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW SOMETHING MORE...
The Italiab lab, after years and years of experience in the printing of movies, has developed a machine that removes the excess oxide millimetrically caused by cyano. After that ... the colours below are all there where they were: nothing gets altered.
If there are no colors present below, then we will have a sort of monochromatism.
Some stocks (Kodak SP or last generation of Easrman for example and many Fuji too), the colours below are all right ... so, the nice thing is that we will come back to appreciate them again.
In the second phase of the treatment, the contrast is rebalanced also giving strength to the blacks. It is important to know that there are precise times for treating the film ... and that the machine designed in the Italian lab succeeds perfectly in all this micrometrically.

Article published in the international magazine SilverGrain Classics (formerly Photoklassik International)

YEARS OF EXPERIMENTATION.
Regarding the imbibing of cyano, it was taken into consideration by the lab at the beginning of the experiments, but immediately rejected by him because it removes contrast, so the proceeded with the current system.

PRICE
The treatment is not expensive. For 16 mm and Super8 prices are only 50 € of reels up 480 meters; or 60 € for reels betwenn 480 meters to 750 meters. Ask to Alberto for 35 mm prices.

ADDRESS.
The exclusive collect address, the only one authorized for the lab, is Movie Magnetic, the Italian firm that is the only one in the World adding paste striping to 16 mm and S8 prints (triacetate or polyester).
Movie Magnetic is owned by Alberto Vangelisti, with a large background in the movie industry. His personal email is: moviemagnetic@gmail.com

THE SECRET UNDERWORLD OF FILM... REVEALED!!!

The secrets of the underworld of collecting films in Super-8, 16 mm and 35 mm,  obtaining rare positives for private use in the dark side of the film industry, sometimes makes us film collectors live adventures of all kinds in the sites more unsuspected.

I reveal all secrets about this activity  in a three-pages article in the current issue of SilverGrain Classics  magazine,  a kind of international bible of the photochemical world in which digital is forbidden.

This quarterly magazine is printed on luxurious quality paper on the best printing-press, and bounded, with Teutonic craftmanship, as if it were a book. Each issue is intended to be collected in a library, with articles of eternal interest that can be enjoyed both now and in the future.

Although edited in Germany, it is published in the modern Esperanto... which is English!   The magazine is sold in the main airports and movie stores accross the world, but due to the pandemic, it is recommended to order it directly from the publisher.

For those who are interested in the subject of film collecting, now that Christmas is approaching, it is not a bad idea to ask Santa for the classic book on the subject, "A Thousand Cuts" written by Jeff Joseph.

WIDE ANGLE SHOOTING IN ANAMORPHIC

Outside of Hollywood, in the exterior border, where are we the "poor men" of the film industry, without big budgets, it is quite an odyssey to be able to film in wide angle in anamorphic.

With the Iscorama range (my favorite Scope system, since you only need to focus on the anamorphic and not the primary lens), in Super-8 it is usually only possible to reach 12 mm focal length (which is, more or less, the standard focal in this format) without vignetting. It is true that in Iscorama, with an anaphosis ratio of x1.5, 12 mm is equivalent to a moderate wide angle of about 8 mm, BUT only in width.

With the 10mm Leitz Cinegon and the Iscorama 36 the wide-angle equivalent of 6.6mm is achieved, but since it is only in width, sometimes, when shooting architectural ensembles, I have run into the problem of height.

Extrema wide angle anamorphic!, with the Century Precission attachment

  • How have I solved it?

To the Iscorama 36 anamorphic set with the Leitz Cinegon 10mm,  I add a Century Precission wide angle attachmebt so that I can get the equivalent of a 4.5mm wide angle in Iscorama!

With the Century Precission, to get the hightest sharpness, the primary lens, that is, the Leitz Cinegon, should have the macro slightly activated (just after the 4 of  0.4).

As the Century Precission weighs a quintal, and the Cinegon's barrel is too weak to hold the Iscorama 36 and the Century together, Mateu Bauzá, of Microdelta Balears,  reinforced the whole that, in the photograph, can be seen with the Fujica ZC1000.

Iscormama 54

Leica M mount of the Leitz Cinegon is screwed to the Fujica ZC1000 C mount via a custom made adapter made many years ago by CBD, with collimation made by http://www.microdeltabalears.com/castellano.htm

Using the Century Precission C2040 (made in USA) wide angle attachment with the combination of Leitz Cinegon 10 mm and Iscorama 36, focus in the anamorphic must be in "infinite" and focus in Leitz Cinegon must be just after 0.4.

Beaulieu Stereo Studio HTI

THE SUPER8 PROJECTOR OF YOUR DREAMS, IN NUMBER 7 OF SILVERGRAIN CLASSICS

The magazine in English, edited in Germany, SILVERGRAIN CLASSICS, is the international reference for photochemical technology in its application by industry and the arts.
A delight to receive issue 7 of SILVERGRAIN CLASSICS, in an extremely rigid envelope, necessary to protect the interior: a hundred-page tome, luxuriously printed on the best four-color printing process on glamorous touch paper.
The magazine and a Kodak Super8 cartridge with the Fujicascope SH30 projector, with 1.0 lens, and in the background, the Fumeo 9119
Each new issue of SILVERGRAIN CLASSICS is a marvel to collect, as it contains a multitude of items of undying interest, which will continue to be relevant for years to come.
"New" projector made by Pro 8mm
For this reason, the magazine is bound like a book: it is to collect copies edition after edition, and keep them, for your consultation, in a prominent place on the bookshelves of home or the business
In this issue, apart from the portfolios Chuck Davis, Tim Rudman, Herr Merzi, Nathalie Daoust, Lenny Foster and Valentín Rizvan, not two, not five, not eight, but eleven technical articles!!! like in-depth studies of the Fuji GW690II or the Leica range from R4 to R7 or everything anyone should know about Super-8 projectors: it's my four-page job of tight text and glorious illustrations "The Super8 Projector of Your Dreams ".
In the two pictures, two French jewels.
SILVERGRAIN CLASSICS magazine is sold in professional photography and film stores, as well as in international airport bookstores. Naturally, it can be obtained by courier or mail by buying it directly, even single numbers, from the publisher at this link: https://silvergrainclassics.com/en/
Fumeo 9145 stereo with 500W lamp: the biggest Super-8 projector ever made.
Nothing better than my editor, Charys Schuler, who combines her passion as a violinist at the Frankfurt Radio Symphony symphony, with her work as a model, photographer and writer, to present this essential issue of SILVERGRAIN CLASSICS, with a special reference to the article I wrote:

The Super8 Projector of Your Dreams".

1) Presor del lado de la lámpara: esto permite proyectar películas de distintos grosores sin necesidad de corregir el enfoque (por ejemplo, poliéster con triacetato);

THE SUPER-8 PROJECTOR OF YOUR DREAMS

A Super-8 cinema projector fascinates to the smallest of the family... but not only them!, with its purring, its toothed wheels and the spinning reels.
When projecting with a quality machine, watching a super-8 movie on the big screen, especially when using top quality emulsions, is an unforgettable experience impossible to emulate with aseptic digital projection.

The arrival of  Kodak Ektachrome film for  Super-8,  in 2018,  has reactivated interest in the direct projection of reversal originals.
My next article in SILVERGRAIN CLASSICS will be about this subjet.
SILVERGRAIN CLASSICS is the must-have magazine published in English lenguage, printed in Germany in luxury glossy paper, for anyone linked to the photo chemical technology as art or industry.
The magazine is internationally distribuited in big cities (New York, Berlin, Los Angeles, Tokyo, London...) and international airports libraries, but also sold by subscription in the address:

  • DESVANECIMIENTO A ROJO SOLVENTADO
